EndNote and AGLC4 style

Law students at Macquarie University are required to use the Australian Guide to Legal Citation (4th Ed) for referencing purposes.  Fortunately, EndNote can be modified to include the citation style AGLC using the information on this page.

Instructions on how to modify EndNote for the AGLC4 style are located in the box titled 'Add AGLC Style to your EndNote'.

If you require further information, consult the Australian Guide to Legal Citation on the Referencing guide, or the Faculty Librarians for Law.

Add AGLC4 style to your EndNote

Open EndNote and then follow these simple steps to add the AGLC4 reference types (a much wider range of legal materials) to your EndNote software.

Step 1: install the legal reference types

  • Right/control click on Reference Types Table.xml and select Save link/target as.
  • Open EndNote and click on Edit (on a Mac click on EndNote) then Preferences/Settings and Reference Types.
  • Select Import and locate the Reference Types Table.xml file.
  • Select Open, Apply, then OK (on a Mac click on Open then Save).
  • Close the Edit Preferences window.

Step 2: install the AGLC style

  • Download AGLC4.ens.
  • Open the file once downloaded. If prompted, select Open with EndNote.
  • EndNote will start and the style window will open, showing you details of the style. Click on File then Save As
  • Ensure the name of the style is listed as AGLC4 (UTS) and select Save.

Step 3: select AGLC4 as your output style

  • Open or create your EndNote library
  • Choose Select Another Style... in the drop down styles menu. This is in the top left of the library (Windows) or in the bottom right of the library (Mac).
  • Scroll through the list of styles, select AGLC4 (UTS), and click on Choose. You should now see the style listed in the styles window.

Populate a Bibliography as you write using AGLC Style

EndNote allows you to populate your bibliography as you write.  When you add a reference to your work, you will notice it appears as a reference at the end of your document.

The Australian Guide to Legal Referencing requires the bibliography to be categorised and this is easily managed as you go, or at the end of your writing journey.  See the next tab, Categorize the Citations, to learn how to set this up.

If you are creating a bibliography, AGLC4 requires dividing the bibliography into categories with separate headings:

A. Articles/Books/Reports
B. Cases
C. Legislation
D. Treaties
E. Other

You can create a bibliography with headings for different categories within Word using EndNote.

Using a Mac or PC

On the EndNote ribbon, click on 'Categorize References', then select 'Configure Categories' from the drop-down menu. Double-click on the category headings to rename them. As a default they will appear as 'Primary Sources' and 'Secondary Sources'. The plus sign next to 'Category Headings' will add new categories.

Select 'Uncategorized References' and drag references across into the different categories.

When you have finished your document, in Word select EndNote > Tools > Convert to Plain text.

Click Continue to save the document in the EndNote format and rename.  This is the master copy with the EndNote coding and should be retained.

In the plain text copy you may make any formatting changes necessary to have the Bibliography in AGLC4 style.  If you did not use the Configure Categories function you can edit the bibliography manually by typing in the headings as prescribed on pages 35-36 of the AGLC4.

Adjust the spacing and save the document.

Legal databases compatible with EndNote

Most legal databases do notsupport the direct export of citations. The table below provides a list of legal journal databases that you can use to export references to EndNote and also provides basic instructions on how to perform the export, along with any issues you may encounter with each database.
