Convenience is a key advantage of ebooks. They can be accessed from anywhere with wifi, or downloaded and used offline at other times.
There's also the advantage of no library fines.
The loan periods vary between 1-7 days, depending on the provider. When it expires, you can create another loan.
Linking directly to chapters
If you want students to consider a particular chapter in a book, most ebook formats will allow you to link directly to that chapter.
Textbooks as ebooks
A standard etextbook is a digital copy of a print textbook. This would be a pdf version of a print text, delivering static text and no interactive learning.
More complex examples of e-textbooks include online text enhanced by interactive learning activities and online assessment such as quizzes.
DRM (Digital Rights Management) software controls the loan periods for downloaded ebooks, the amount you can print or copy from a particular title, and the number and type of devices you can read an ebook on.
Ebooks can be read online without downloading to your personal devices or computer using the ebook provider's platform.
Adobe DRM is one of the most common forms of DRM. Essentially, the difference is that DRM locks ebooks so they can be read only with authorised software, and DRM free ebooks can be downloaded and read with any PDF viewer on any device.
Why don't all ebooks look the same?
We buy our subscriptions or single titles from different publishers and platforms. Once you click through to the title you want, it will be displayed in the preferred format of that provider.
