Protocols and Guidelines

Protocols vary from group to group, and vary over time. Knowledge of protocols requires particular knowledge embedded in place.

AIATSIS has created the Guidelines for Ethical Research in Australian Indigenous Studies (GERAIS) to ensure that research follows a process of meaningful engagement and reciprocity between the researcher, the individuals and/or communities involved in the research.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Protocols for Libraries, Archives and Information Services Protocols are intended to guide libraries, archives and information services in appropriate ways to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the communities which the organisations serve, and to handle materials with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content.

As a starting point to researching Indigenous Protocols you may like to read some of these articles found via MultiSearch.

Our Language website has a language protocol guide.
