APC-Free Pathways to Open Access

Green Open Access at MQ

Waranara Library strongly encourages researchers to make the appropriate version of their research outputs freely available by uploading the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) version of their articles to the Macquarie University Research Portal via Pure.

Using Pure for Research Outputs at Macquarie University

Adding Publications to Pure

  • Researchers can add or import their publications into Pure.
  • During this process, they should upload the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM):
    • This is the version accepted after peer review, before final publisher formatting.
    • Uploading the AAM allows the Library to make the publication Open Access, if permitted by the publisher.

Please see this guide for further information about uploading the author accepted manuscript version into Pure.

Diamond Open Access Journals

To publish your article open access without paying an APC, consider choosing a Diamond Open Access journal. Search the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) for titles in your discipline. It contains details of nearly 14,000 journals that publish without fees.

Fee-Based Pathways to Open Access

You can opt to publish your research output via one of the paid open access models. This includes fully open access journals, hybrid journals and some open access book publishing models that require the author or their institution pay an Article Process Charge (APC) or Book Processing Charge (BPC).

  • The Library does not fund individual Article Processing Charges (APCs) or Book Processing Charges (BPCs).
  • Instead, we support:
    • Transformative agreements with publishers, allowing Macquarie authors to publish Open Access without paying APCs directly.
    • Agreements that align with the University’s research strategy and promote a shift to Open Access.

Waranara Library’s Criteria for Supporting Open Access Initiatives

When evaluating support for Open Access initiatives, Waranara Library considers the following:

  • Innovation in Cost and Access Models
Does the initiative or business model introduce new approaches to funding or access, or offer opportunities to reallocate spending away from traditional subscription or firm order models?

  • Advancement of Open Access Availability
Does the initiative present a creative or forward-thinking strategy to expand the availability of Open Access resources?

  • Alignment with University Needs
Does the initiative enhance access to Open Access resources that support Macquarie University’s research, learning, and teaching priorities?
