Open Access

Provides an overview of Open Access and Publish & Read Agreements

Know your rights regarding copyright

Waranara Library's Copyright website contains information you should know regarding publishing your research.

Before you publish, protect your rights. Always read your publishing contract carefully and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Make sure you understand what rights you’re retaining, and what rights you may be giving away.

Make sure you understand:

  • What rights you’re retaining (e.g. can you share your article openly?).
  • What rights the publisher has over your work.
  • Whether you’re allowed to deposit your work in a repository.
  • If there are any restrictions on reuse or sharing.

We encourage authors to consider publishing Open Access, but it is important that you understand:

  • Whether the journal supports Open Access—and under what terms.
  • What fees (e.g. APCs) you may be responsible for.
  • Please note - some publishers will secure exclusive commercial rights to your work in the publication agreement even where you have chosen a C-BY-NC-ND licence. This may mean that any future commercial use, even by the yourself as author, will require permission from the Publisher.

Don’t assume—clarify before you commit. If anything is unclear, seek advice from the Library (copyright@mq.edu.au)

Author Addendum

Publisher agreements generally ask authors to sign over all of their rights. Where the publisher agreement seeks to assign your copyright in your work to the publisher, we recommend you consider using an Author Addendum. These documents are legal instruments that can assist authors in retaining control over their work.

Author Addendums change the terms of the publisher agreement by ensuring the author retains copyright. In retaining copyright, the author is able to determine how the work is copied, shared and distributed even after publication.
