Open Access Models

There are different ways to publish open access, from free to publish models like self-archiving to those that include costs for authors or their institutions.

Green Open Access (Self-Archiving)
Green Open Access allows authors to make the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) version of their work freely available through an institutional repository, such as the MQ Research Portal. This option is available even if the article was originally published behind a paywall. It typically involves no fees, and while embargoes may apply, these are managed by the Library. Waranara Library strongly encourages researchers to take advantage of this model.

Diamond Open Access
Diamond Open Access is a community-driven publishing model where neither authors nor readers are charged fees. These journals are often small-scale, multilingual, and culturally diverse, and are typically owned and managed by academic communities. By promoting bibliodiversity and equitable access to knowledge, Diamond OA is widely regarded as the most inclusive open access model.

Gold Open Access
Gold Open Access is a model where an article is made openly available immediately upon publication. This model generally requires the payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs) or Book Processing Charges (BPCs), which are covered by the author or their institution. Costs vary and can be significant. Once paid, the article is accessible without a paywall, and many publishers now offer this option. The term Gold Open Access is also often used to describe fully open access journals.

Hybrid (Publishing Gold Open Access in Subscription Journals)
Hybrid Open Access refers to subscription-based journals that offer authors the option to make individual articles open access by paying an APC. In these journals, some articles are openly available while others remain behind a paywall. APCs may be covered under Read and Publish agreements. When an article is made open in a hybrid journal, it is considered Gold Open Access.

Crowd Unlatching
Crowd unlatching is an innovative open access model that combines crowdfunding with collaborative publishing. Publishers work with libraries and institutions to co-fund the release of scholarly collections, making them openly available to the public. This approach promotes shared responsibility for open access and expands the reach of academic content. Knowledge Unlatched is a leading example of this model.

Subscribe to Open (S2O)
Subscribe to Open (S2O) is a model in which journal publishers make content open access for a given year once a sufficient number of library subscriptions are secured. This collective approach activates open access based on subscription volume, allowing institutions to support broader dissemination of scholarly work without individual APCs.
