Research Impact Metrics

Provides an overview of Research Impact Metrics

Creating Metrics Reports

No single metric can provide a full picture of your research impact. We suggest you choose a range of metrics to highlight your best performance. A metrics report can be created to combine these metrics.

See below instructions on how to create reports from SciVal, InCites and Altmetric Explorer:

SciVal uses data from the Scopus database to generate a range of research metrics. The Explore module in SciVal allows you to produce a summary research performance report that can be exported as a pdf. This comprehensive report includes citations, field-weighted citation index, h-index, research topics, academic-corporate collaboration, publications in top journal percentiles and more.

Step by step instructions for generating a report

1. Log into SciVal.

2. Go to Explore.

3. Search for your profile by surname and select it.

4. Set the date range. Note that the Summary Report provides limited 5-year and 10-year date ranges. For longer date ranges see point 4a.

4a. Any menu option here which has a purple dot will allow custom date ranges. Use these menu options if you need different dates.

To export as a pdf

5. Click Add Summary to Reporting.

6. Go to Reporting.

7. Tick the box next to your Summary Report.

8. Go to Export and select Export as a PDF File.

  • For more detailed analyses of particular types of metrics, you can also use the menus on the left of the Explore screen (see highlighted in point 4a above).
  • If you want to Compare your research performance in comparison to others, there is a benchmarking module for this - see below.
  • The Collaboration module lets you evaluate your existing research collaborations and identify new opportunities for collaboration.

Scopus and Web of Science can also generate reports that include author metrics.

InCites uses Web of Science data. The Reports module allows you to create a Researcher report including; a full list of publications, citations, h-index, Category Normalized Citation Impactresearch topics and performance indicators such as academic-corporate collaboration, publications in top journal percentiles, outputs in top citation percentiles and international collaborations.

Step by step instructions for generating a report

1. Log into Incites. Note: You will need to register with your Macquarie email address the first time you use it.

2. Select Report.

3. When you get to the screen below, change the report type to Researcher and click Go.

4. Find your profile. The default search is by surname, first name.

5. Set the date range.

6. Scroll down the page and use the tabs to view the metrics and charts.

7. Save or Export to pdf.

Step by step instructions for generating a report

1. Sign into Altmetric Explorer.

2. Click Edit Search at the top of the screen.

3. Search for your profile and select it.

Note: If you do not want a report on an author, there are many different search options such as department, subject, or a single publication.

Note: If you can't find your profile in the author box, try the ORCID search at the bottom of the screen.

4. Click Run Search.

5. This generates your altmetrics data across multiple tabs.

Setting up Alerts

You can export, save or set up an alert for the data, but you must do this tab by tab. For each tab:

6. Click Save Search.

7. Click the list icon on the left to access your saved searches.

8. In your Saved Searches, you can set up alerts so that the latest data is emailed to you regularly.

9. To export a pdf of the tab, click Shareable Report and print to pdf.

Note; when you are in the report there is also an option to Edit Report. Here you can join the different reports into a single report.
