How to request items not held by the Library

Copyright and interlibrary loans.

While we strive to source material, sometimes this will not always be possible to due to copyright legislation that must be observed both here in Australia and with partner libraries overseas. Some things to keep in mind when requesting are:

  • There are limitations related to the quantity that you are requesting. Under the provisions of the Copyright Act 1968, as amended, we are limited to sending only one chapter or 10 per cent of a book. And a single article per journal issue.
  • Copyright law varies by country. This can further limit what libraries located in certain regions are willing or able to supply to us.
  • As copyright holders, publishers are entitled to set further license limitations to the dissemination of their digital content. These licenses can further limit or entirely prohibit the sharing of material between libraries.
