APA 7th Referencing

Instructions and links for Referencing support

Author information

How to determine the author's family name
  • In English, the family name usually appears last, e.g. Jane Brown, Sarah Green. For this reason, the family name is also called the surname or last name.
  • In English, if the family name appears first, there will usually be a comma between the family name and the given name, e.g. Brown, Jane.
  • Many search engines, databases and journals provide a citation generator which will provide the correct formatting for the reference including names.
  • You can also try searching for other sources that cite the source you are interested in, and check how they reference that source in their reference list.
